LightLock
September 2024 – January 2025
A smart lighting-based solution to help students build healthier smartphone habits—introducing a new normal through subtle social nudges.

I’m proud to present LightLock to you — a concept I helped design for FitPhone, a project by Fontys Eindhoven focused on healthier smartphone use.
Together with my team, we developed LightLock to gently guide university students toward more mindful screen habits. The idea is simple: by linking smartphone use to ambient light levels, we nudge students to reduce usage in study environments. It’s a subtle social intervention, but one rooted in smart behavioural design.

As a bonus? I personally later wrote a follow-up report focused on improving LightLock’s social and environmental impact. That process led to a radical rethinking of the lighting system—one that made it both more sustainable and socially sustainable. If you’re interested, have a look at the report below!
